Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

What next for both teams?

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
