Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
